BCCK WRAPS UP 2024 ON A HIGH NOTE

The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) has achieved a phenomenal milestone in 2024, exceeding its annual target by nearly 30%. Hosting 519 events and welcoming over 30,000 visitors and delegates. BCCK significantly boosted Sarawak and Malaysia’s economy with an estimated economic impact of RM289 million since 2010.

Among the prestigious international conferences hosted this year were the Asia Pacific Neuro-Critical Care Conference, Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference & Exhibition, International Conference for Tropical Medicine and Malaria, the World Congress of Herpetology and among others.

A RECORD-BREAKING YEAR

In 2024, BCCK successfully delivered a diverse range of events, including: 14 international conferences, 302 national and local meetings, 6 exhibitions, 99 banquets and weddings, 3 sports events, 91 offsite catering services to a vibrant spectrum of 2 concerts & comedy shows.

In April, the iconic Juh Sungkei di BCCK Ramadan Buffet drew over 50,000 diners, setting a new attendance record and surpassing 2023’s numbers despite operating one day fewer.

EXCITING PROSPECTS FOR 2025

Despite global economic and geopolitical challenges, BCCK remains optimistic about the future. Secured international conferences for 2025 includes the 3rd International Traditional Natural Medical Physicians Conference, Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Conference, Asia Carbon Conference, World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress, World Heritage Food & Franchise Summit and others. BCCK will continue working closely with local stakeholders, state and national bureaus, and industry partners to bring further world-class events to Sarawak and Malaysia.

EXPANSION AND INNOVATION

As BCCK celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2024, exciting developments are underway:

  • A New Deck Expansion: A scenic space for dining and private receptions with a view of the Sarawak River, accommodating up to 300 guests, is set to open in Q2 2025.
  • Enhanced Digital Connectivity: The Centre upgraded its Wi-Fi system to support up to 20,000 devices simultaneously, ensuring seamless, high-speed internet access for all attendees.

SUSTAINABILITY & SOCIAL IMPACT

BCCK’s dedication to sustainability and social impact remains a foundation of its operations. Through its ISO-certified systems, BCCK has implemented food waste bioconversion programs in partnership with a local farm, converting waste into organic fertilisers. From January 2022 to September 2024, BCCK recycled 102kg of E-Waste, 3,516 kg of mixed paper, 36 kg of aluminium cans, 3,516 kg of scrap iron, and 11,882 kg of used cooking oil – highlighting their commitment to long-term sustainability.

BCCK collaborates with local NGOs such as PERKATA, Kuching Autistic Association, and Sarawak Deaf Association, offering them complimentary exhibition space to showcase handcrafted items during international conference. Many conference materials, like bags and landyards, are sourced from these organisations, supporting local communities.

ACCOLADES THAT REDEFINE EXCELLENCE

BCCK’s relentless pursuit of excellence was recognised with several awards:

  • Three accolades at the Malaysia Business Events Awards 2023 (MACEOS):
  1. Purpose-built Convention & Exhibition Centre Excellence Award.
  2. New Homegrown Event Excellence Award (Consumer Exhibition).
  3. New Homegrown Event Excellence Award (Congress/Convention).
  • Venue Award in the Exhibition Venue Category at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 in Laos.
  • AIPC Quality Standards Re-Certification at the Gold Level (2024-2029)

These honours cement BCCK’s reputation as a global leader in the Business Events and the hospitality sectors.

COLLABORATION ON A GLOBAL SCALE

BCCK Joined the Asia Venue Alliance (AVA), fostering collaboration among convention centres across Asia through business leads exchanges, cross-promotion, and shared industry insights.

He further added, “We have been able to achieve such phenomenal milestones due to the hard work, commitment, and effort put in by the team here at BCCK. I am extremely proud of their efforts, which has culminated in the best year for BCCK since we began in 2009.
